What Is AEO? The Rise of Answer‑Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the next frontier of SEO.

🧠 TL;DR:
Forget ten blue links. AI is rewriting the rules of search.
AEO: Answer‑Engine Optimization. Basically, it's a new strategy for making your content show up in AI-generated answers from Google SGE, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and beyond.
Early attempts to describe this shift called it Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Which is a nod to optimizing for generative models. But the term AEO has gained traction thanks to industry experts like Jason Barnard and tools like Kalicube, which popularized the concept.
What Is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer‑Engine Optimization, a content strategy focused on getting your content cited by AI-powered answer engines, not just traditional search engines.
Instead of optimizing just for rankings, AEO is about:
- Structuring content so LLMs can understand it
- Answering specific user intents clearly
- Becoming the source quoted in AI-generated answers
Why AEO Matters Now
Search has changed:
- Google’s SGE (Search Generative Experience) pushes AI summaries to the top
- Perplexity, ChatGPT, and You.com now act as discovery tools
- AI agents and copilots are crawling the web, extracting data, and summarizing in real time
The game is no longer just about ranking, but its focus is now on retrievability.
Kieran Flanagan, Marketing SVP from HubSpot, had a great post on the benefits of AEO a few months ago:

AEO vs Traditional SEO
SEO | AEO |
---|---|
Optimizes for crawlers | Optimizes for LLMs |
Keywords & meta tags | Questions & clear answers |
Compete for rank | Compete to be cited |
Link-heavy content | Dense, structured, and factual content |
